What to expect
The hostal was still there. After arriving in Cusco, I had to take a look at where I had stayed twenty years earlier. Then we carried on to the Plaza de Armas as a family. Wedding couples outside the church, busy arcades and restaurants everywhere: plenty to look at before ticking off a single sight. That evening we ate at Kusykay. We enjoyed the lomo saltado; the children were pleased to find familiar food on the menu. A good start.
How it fits into a journey
On 11 August we started slowly and walked to Mercado Wanchaq. Later we joined a guided city walk. The guide pointed out a courtyard and details on buildings we had already walked straight past. That combination worked for us: explore independently first, then let someone show you what you missed. After Cusco, we continued into the Sacred Valley.
