An outing to a lake, then back to your hotel and pool. Or staying at the same forest lodge between outings, with meals and guided visits already part of the programme. Around Puerto Maldonado you can arrange very different Amazon stays. Start with where you will sleep and the places you want to visit.

In 2025 we stayed at Enai, on the Madre de Dios. A hotel with a pool and separately arranged excursions worked very well for us: out into the jungle, then time to cool off and return to a comfortable room. That was our accommodation choice on the family trip.
A hotel base with separate excursions
With this approach, you arrange the room and visits separately. You can leave a day free of excursions, choose a shorter outing or spend two full days exploring. Record the departure and return points for each booking. An excursion advertised from Puerto Maldonado need not start at your hotel door.
Enai is a concrete example of this hotel approach. Its own website describes a hotel on the Madre de Dios outside town, with a pool. Lake Sandoval appears among its tours. Staying near Puerto Maldonado can therefore mean a riverside hotel rather than a room in town. Check which visits are offered from your particular address.
Put the room, transport and selected excursions into one total. For each outing, note whether guiding, admission and lunch are included. Add the meals you still need to arrange yourself. You can then compare the room-based option with the same parts of a lodge package.
A lodge package brings several parts together
Rainforest Expeditions describes Posada Amazonas stays as including accommodation, meals, guided activities in small groups and scheduled land and river transfers to and from Puerto Maldonado. Guests choose from daily available excursions. A bundled stay can therefore still leave choices within the programme.
Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica lists meals, an English- or Spanish-speaking guide, à-la-carte excursions and return airport-to-lodge transport by land and river among its included services. Lake Sandoval admission is listed too. These are specific items to look for in your own package.
Read the guiding arrangements separately. Booking excursions individually does not automatically mean a private guide; à la carte describes your choice of visits, not the number of people joining them. Have the operator specify the maximum group size per guide, the language and any private option. A private room and private guiding are separate arrangements.
Sandoval and Alto Tambopata lead in different directions
SERNANP places Lake Sandoval in the Madre de Dios area. Its described approach combines river transport with a walking trail, followed by another boat visit on the lake. Put those stages alongside your hotel address. This shows how much travelling belongs to a day excursion.
According to SERNANP, the Chuncho and Colorado clay licks are in the Alto Tambopata sector, along the Tambopata River. That is a different direction from Sandoval. If an offer simply says “clay lick”, ask which one. Have the lodge and chosen clay lick marked together before planning your stay around them.
Work through the last travel day too. Ask where the transfer ends, which boat and road stages it includes, and which departure flight the operator can combine with it. Keep waiting time or an extra night in town visible in your plan. A lodge programme’s end point needs to fit your onward journey.
What happens between the excursions?
Ask for a daily outline showing departures, meals, returns and free time. An early outing may mean a later breakfast; a full day away leaves less time at your accommodation. Look at which parts you actually want to do. Wildlife photographs make a brochure appealing, but cannot determine your own sightings.
For a family, compare everyone’s wishes too. Does everyone want the same walk? What is arranged if someone skips an outing, and when will you meet again? Give a meal or an afternoon at the accommodation a real place in the plan. Both a hotel with separate activities and a lodge package may leave room for this, but that room needs to appear in your chosen programme.
Have the room described just as clearly: beds, a sitting area, bathroom facilities, and whether the room is enclosed or open towards the forest. Ask which facilities will be available during your stay. The word “lodge” does not tell you, and a pool photograph says little about how much time you will have to use it.
Compare two quotes against the same wishes
Send both operators the same arrival and departure details, room requirements and two preferred outings. Ask for the precise accommodation, transfers, guiding arrangements, meals and included admissions. List extras and arrangements for a changed programme separately. This makes the offer easier to understand without a list of hotel names or starting prices.
A hotel base suits you if you want to arrange outings separately and enjoy returning to that place. A lodge package suits you if accommodation and nature visits can form one part of the trip. In both cases, make the locations and transfers work first. The four-day Tambopata itinerary can then help distribute arrival, two visiting days and departure across your journey.
