What to expect
Start with the walls. This was a harbour defence, not a palace with a sea view. The King's and Queen's towers help explain its layout. Ask how the different parts worked together; a plan can tell you more here than another cannon photograph.
How it fits into a journey
Arrange a trip to the fortress and the return separately. Its Callao address does not make it an automatic outing during a short airport connection.
