NederlandWereldwijd, checked on 31 October 2026: the Dutch Ecuador travel advice was changed on 26 June 2026 and is displayed as still valid on 31 October.
Planning to continue from Tumbes through Huaquillas into Ecuador? Read the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs warning first. It lists El Oro as orange, meaning essential travel only. Its explanation excludes an ordinary holiday and expressly says that an orange area is not safe to visit for a holiday. This is the ministry’s warning for the province in the advice consulted.
Huaquillas is in Ecuador’s El Oro province, at the border with Peru. The municipality confirms that location on its own website. El Oro in the travel advice therefore refers to the province containing this border town, rather than a distant part of Ecuador.
The warning names Huaquillas itself
NederlandWereldwijd lists Huaquillas, Arenillas and Machala among the places where violent robberies occur. It also explicitly lists the route between Guayaquil and Huaquillas in that section. The warning is therefore not confined to the moment of passing an immigration desk: both the border town and the named corridor appear separately in the official advice.
Guayaquil’s category does not change El Oro’s
The ministry gives Guayaquil city a yellow category, with additional warnings for parts of the city. It also lists El Oro among the orange provinces and Guayaquil–Huaquillas among routes affected by violent robbery. Read those statements together: yellow for the city does not change the warning for El Oro and the named route.
The same source also warns that landmines may be present near the Ecuador–Peru border. Read that section in the full advice too; this is not a question answered simply by finding out when a border post opens.
Read the warning before fixing your onward plans

The source also offers an information service for notifications when the advice changes. This is Dutch government advice; if you use another government’s guidance, check its own issuer and current information.
Ask the relevant border authorities about opening hours and border formalities separately. Keep that question distinct from the warning: an open border or an available bus ticket does not withdraw the travel advice described for El Oro.
