You share a room price with your travel companion. A train ticket is yours alone. A jungle lodge price may also cover meals, guiding and boat transfers. That is why one daily average tells you little until you know how you want to travel through Peru. Start with your overnight stops and the big components. The coffee along the way can come later.

Start with the right unit
Write down the number of travellers, paid nights and days you will need meals. The examples below use 21 days with 20 paid hotel nights. Your flight times, an overnight bus or a departure after midnight can change that count. Record the difference before multiplying anything by a daily allowance.
For accommodation, record the price for the whole room and its permitted occupancy. For transport, check each person, journey and direction. A private guide or transfer may instead have one group price. For a family, show whether you are budgeting for one family room or two rooms. Only enter a child rate once that provider has confirmed it for your ages and visit.
Three price examples, each with its own limits
Checked on 31 October 2026: Mayu Boutique Hotel in Cusco displays discounted room rates of S/ 180 for its Habitación Matrimonial Clásica and S/ 290 for its Habitación Familiar Superior on its own tariff page. These are published room prices, not a reservation we have confirmed for your dates. Check occupancy, included services, charges and conditions in the actual offer. We selected these examples because the tariffs are public; they are not personal hotel recommendations.
Cruz del Sur publishes a starting fare of S/ 60 for one Lima–Paracas journey on its own route page. It states that the final price depends on the date and availability. For two people, twice S/ 60 is therefore an initial reference for one direction, not a fixed return fare or a complete hotel-to-hotel transfer. We also checked this page on 31 October 2026.
A third example shows how substantial a separate travel block can be. Rainforest Expeditions lists a 3-day, 2-night Posada Amazonas programme from USD 1,266 per person in a double room, checked on 31 October 2026. That figure belongs to that provider and programme, not every Amazon visit. Ask which transfers, meals and activities your quotation includes before comparing it with separate hotel nights.
Three budgets for comparing your own choices
The amounts below are deliberately chosen calculation inputs, not measured average prices or bookable offers. Each example has 21 days and 20 hotel nights. International flights, insurance, a multi-day trek and a jungle lodge are excluded. Transport and visits are provisional totals to replace with your own quotations, including every Machu Picchu component you want. Keep an unquoted item visibly unquoted, even when the arithmetic already looks tidy.
Two people, using a simple-room input: 20 × S/ 180 for accommodation = S/ 3,600. For meals, we choose 42 person-days × S/ 60 = S/ 2,520. We allocate S/ 1,600 to transport and S/ 1,800 to visits. The subtotal is S/ 9,520. Adding a chosen ten-percent reserve gives S/ 10,472 for two people. That reserve is a calculation choice, not a prescribed or guaranteed sufficient buffer.
Two people, allowing more for accommodation and arranged transport: 20 × S/ 300 = S/ 6,000 for rooms, 42 × S/ 100 = S/ 4,200 for meals, S/ 2,600 for transport and S/ 2,400 for visits. The subtotal is S/ 15,200; with the same ten-percent reserve it becomes S/ 16,720. This does not automatically buy a defined comfort standard everywhere. It shows what higher room and meal inputs do over the same trip length.
Four people, using two rooms as the input: 20 × S/ 360 = S/ 7,200 for accommodation. Meals become 84 person-days × S/ 60 = S/ 5,040. With S/ 3,000 for transport and S/ 3,200 for visits, the subtotal is S/ 18,440; with a ten-percent reserve, S/ 20,284. No age discounts are assumed. A suitable family room can change the calculation; first confirm that it is offered for your actual group.
What does one different choice do to the total?
Raise the first example’s room input from S/ 180 to S/ 250. Across twenty nights that adds S/ 1,400 before the reserve. That is more useful than saying you want a little more comfort. Moving three nights from one place to another does not change the night count, but transport, room rates and visits may change. Remove the costs you drop as well as adding the new ones.
Give Machu Picchu its own calculation
Give entry, outbound and return trains, station transfers, the connection from the town, guiding and any overnight stay their own lines. Request the same breakdown for a package. Mark what is paid, what is merely mentioned and what remains to arrange. This avoids counting a transfer twice or comparing a train ticket with an organised visit. Our independent-booking versus package guide develops that comparison.
Keep soles and dollars separate at first
Keep the original currency beside every price. Then convert your own total using one chosen exchange rate and record its date. That rate is a calculation aid; card terms and charges can change the final amount debited. Do not treat two different conversion dates as a difference in the room price. Use our separate money guide for paying and withdrawing cash.
Finish the budget before fixing the route
Check the route once more for missing items: international flights, baggage, terminal transfers, meals on travel days, laundry, separate admissions and anything already covered by a booked stay. Keep uncertain amounts separate. If the total is too high, choose a change that also improves the trip: fewer moves, replacing an expensive block or staying longer in one base. A lower figure is only useful if the trip above it is still yours.
