Barranco

In Barranco, streets of old houses and small squares lead towards a narrow ravine opening towards the sea. The Puente de los Suspiros spans it; elsewhere are galleries, museums and restaurants that invite a longer meal. This is coastal Lima, with the Pacific waiting at the end of a street or a walk.

It is a good district for looking both outside and in. A walk among the houses gains another dimension with a visit to an art museum; afterwards, there is the street to return to. Barranco deserves a visit of its own, particularly if you want to include a meal or an evening performance.

The bridge and the Bajada de Baños

The Puente de los Suspiros was built in 1876 to connect the sides of the natural ravine. Looking down makes the need for a crossing clear. The Bajada de Baños follows the hollow towards the coast, past old houses and greenery. Fishermen from Surco once used this route to reach the beaches.

Allow time for the side paths and the view from Mirador Catalina Recavarren. Extend the walk to Paseo Sáenz Peña or return to Parque Municipal for a break. The bajada slopes down: work out where you want to come back up, particularly with a pushchair or if steps are difficult.

Pedro de Osma: angels carrying guns

Museo Pedro de Osma focuses on colonial-period art. Among the arcángeles arcabuceros, look for the combination of wings, elaborate clothing and firearms. These armed archangels developed in workshops in Cusco and the Alto Perú. A single image offers a way into understanding the distinctive visual language of religious art in the Andes.

The museum makes a useful companion to the churches of Cusco, whether you have already visited them or will go later. Pick a few works and look for recurring faces, clothes and symbols. With children, this gives you something tangible to discuss: what is that angel holding, and why is it so striking?

Modern art at the MAC

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima stands at Avenida Grau 1511. Its collection includes Fernando de Szyszlo, Kukuli Velarde and artists from elsewhere in Latin America. Photography, sculpture and video sit alongside painting in the collection. The exhibition programme determines what will be on view during your visit.

Choose Pedro de Osma for colonial religious art, or the MAC if modern and contemporary work interests you. Lunch makes a welcome pause between two museums. If walking is your priority, combine one museum with the Bajada and nearby streets, leaving time to go inside somewhere that catches your eye.

A table at Isolina

Isolina, at Avenida San Martín 101, draws on Lima's taberna tradition. Its menu includes pan con pejerrey: a sandwich with fried small fish, tartare sauce and salsa criolla. The butifarra de lechón pairs pork ham with the same onion salad. Both are useful options after a walk when you want something satisfying without ordering several courses.

For a longer meal, ordering together helps: ask which dishes are good to share and how much your group needs. Specify the Barranco branch when booking; Isolina also has a restaurant in Surco. A small detail that can save an unexpected taxi journey.

An evening in Barranco

Alongside restaurants, Barranco has bars and peñas, where music may form part of the evening. For a live performance, choose an advertised programme so you know what you are coming for. If museums and the coastal walk are your priorities, visit during the day and let your appetite decide whether to stay for dinner.

Stay here or visit from Miraflores?

Around Parque Municipal and the Bajada, you are close to the familiar walking spots. The MAC and Pedro de Osma lie on different sides of this central visitor area; let the museum you most want to see determine your order. Barranco also works as a separate outing from accommodation in Miraflores.

If you want to stay here and make an early start, ask how the room faces the street and any bar or terrace. A district with nightlife can feel different from one street to the next. For an evening visit, settle on a collection point for the journey back, saving you the search after the event.
